SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Remember in 2003 when the Panthers had a combination of power in Stephen Davis (now retired) and speed in DeShaun Foster (now with San Francisco)? If not, here’s a reminder – Super Bowl XXXVIII.

The current roster of the restructured Panthers boats a similar tandem, rookie power-back Jonathan Stewart and shifty, third-year man DeAngelo Williams. With the 5’10”, 235-pound, bulldozing frame of Stewart and his 4.48 40-yard dash time, DeAngelo’s streaky ability of dodging defenders should complement nicely.
“Looks like we got a nice combination,” linebacker Thomas Davis said. “I think they’ll be pretty good together.”
According to Davis, the personalities of the two running backs are the complete opposite.
“He’s (Jonathan) a real quiet guy. That’s the kind of guy you want on your team, not boasting and doing a whole lot of talk,” Davis said. “Then you have a guy like DeAngelo who’s always running his mouth.”
The first day of camp it was apparent that Stewart was feeling the rookie jitters as he dropped a wide-open pass in the flat and was formally welcomed to the NFL by a big hit from Davis.
“I’m out here like a sheep thrown into the wolves’ pit.”
Stewart also said he wasn't too worried about having to build a relationship with the established running back, and he was right. To help subside the ‘wolves’ pit’ feeling and ease the shift from the Pacific to the Atlantic, DeAngelo has taken Jonathan under his wing.
“When I came in here from mini-camp, we kind of connected really well and the similarities that we have off the field are right on point, like playing video games and wrestling,” Stewart said with a laugh.
“He (DeAngelo) likes paint-balling and I mean I’ve never done that, but it’s something I can see myself gettin’ into hanging out with him.”
